Responsible conduct of research, as described in the , is a commitment by researchers to honest and thoughtful inquiry, rigorous analysis, dissemination of research results and adherence to the highest professional standards in order to create a positive and productive research environment. 

In practical terms, this principle involves:

  • conducting research involving humans in an ethical manner

  • ensuring proper animal care and use  

  • engaging in research integrity practices around data management, supervision and attribution

  • safe and responsible handling and use of hazardous materials required for research purposes

  • ensuring that research involving Indigenous peoples and communities is premised on respectful relationships
