Senate Appeals Committee

Purpose

Ìý

The purpose of the Senate Appeals Committee is to:

1 Hear student academic appeals from faculty-level decisions.
2 Hear student discipline appeals from the Senate Discipline Committee in accordance with the jurisdiction and procedures established by Senate.

Membership

The Senate Appeals Committee comprises:

Elected voting members:

  • One member from each faculty, one of whom shall be elected to be chair by the members of the committee.Ìý

Student voting members:Ìý

Responsibilities

a) Forming panels from among its members to hear academic appeals commenced by students in relation to faculty-level decisions (or failures to make a decision) in accordance with the jurisdiction and procedures established by Senate;Ìý

b) Forming panels from among its members to hear appeals by students of decisions made by the Senate Discipline Committee in relation to academic and non-academic misconduct in accordance with the jurisdiction and procedures established by Senate; andÌý

c) Through its panels, conducting the hearings described in section 1 (a) and (b), above.

a) Meeting a minimum of once annually to receive training concerning the jurisdiction and procedures established by Senate for this Committee, the proper conduct of a hearing, and other relevant legal principles (for new members, attendance is mandatory); andÌý

b) Meeting more frequently as required to review its operation or to address emerging policy issues as required from time to time.Ìý

Reporting annually to Senate concerning the work of the committee and the decisions of hearing panels convened during the year.

Submitting an appeal

Academic appeals

If you are a student who is appealing a faculty-level academic decision, please note:Ìý

  • Before submitting an academic appeal to the SAC, you must have exhausted all appeal regulations and procedures of your faculty.ÌýÌý
  • Your appeal should be submitted within 30 calendar days of the date that the decision under appeal was sent to you. If you received the decision more than 30 days ago, you will need to apply for an extension when submitting your appeal.Ìý

Discipline appeals

If you are a student who is appealing a Senate Discipline CommitteeÌýdecision, please note:Ìý

  • Your appeal must meet the grounds for appeal outlined in the SAC Jurisdiction and Appeals ProceduresÌý[PDF-39KB].Ìý
  • Your appeal should be submitted within 30 calendar days of the date that the decision under appeal was sent to you. If you received the decision more than 30 days ago, you will need to apply for an extension when submitting your appeal.ÌýÌý
