Optimal fire protection of process plantsÌý

Abstract

Chemical and process plants are attributed with large quantities of flammable chemicals which could result in catastrophic fires. The ever-growing industrial-urban interfaces can make the consequences of such fires even more catastrophic by impacting not only the chemical plants but also the nearby communities. Not all fires can be prevented. Thus, fire protection plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of potential fires. Due to the limited resources, however, effective fire protection of process plants demands for decision support methodologies to enable cost-effective integration of fire protection systems (e.g., sprinkler systems), firefighting strategies, and evacuation plans while considering the resources and the risks.

Developing decision support methodologies for fire protection of chemical plants has been the main focus of my research over the past 5 years. This presentation will present in a nutshell some research progress we have made in this field

Speaker Biography

I am an assitant professor at Ryerson University, Toronto. Before joining Ryerson in 2019, I was an assistant professor at Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. I have bachelor and Master’s degrees in civil engineering from Sharif University of Technology, Iran, and a PhD degree in oil & gas engineering from Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John’s.

Having backgrounds in both civil engineering and oil & gas engineering, my research area includes probabilistic safety assessment of a variety of systems and infrastructure with a focus on process plants.
