HÂþ»­'s School of Nursing offers several forms of financial assistance to students at the graduate level.

In addition to the funding opportunities offered by the School of Nursing, HÂþ»­ University also provides several forms of financial assistance to the broader student community. You may be eligible for some of these programs.

Nursing Scholarships and Awards

Ìý

Alexandra Hirth Award for Excellence in Nursing Research

Awarded annually to a full-time or part-time MScN or PhD student currently enrolled in the School of Nursing, whose thesis has the potential to contribute to the development of nursing knowledge and whose research focuses on issues related to individuals or families living with chronic illness.

Thesis approval must be received before scholarship application deadline.

Deadline for applications is May 31st.

Anna Trenholm Memorial Prize

To honour the memory of Anna Trenholm Diploma Outpost Nursing 1970, BN '76), this convocation prize is awarded to one or more annual awards to a graduating full-time or part-time nursing student(s) in the Nurse Practitioner MN Degree program who, in the judgment of faculty, show(s) the most promise for contributing to the health of a northern Canadian community.

 

All applicants will forward a letter to the awarding committee, outlining their plans for contributing to the health of a northern Canadian community.

 

Deadline for Applications is April 30th.

 

 

Dr. R.M. MacDonald Scholarship

This entrance scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time or part-time student entering the Master of Nursing, Nurse Practitioner stream at HÂþ»­ University. The scholarship will be awarded in October of each year.

In selecting a recipient, students entering in both January and September of each year will be considered. The scholarship will be awarded in the Fall and will be inclusive of January and September applicants of that calendar year. All applicants will forward a letter to the awarding committee, outlining how they intend to contribute to the nurse practitioner role. All applicants will forward two letters of reference to the awarding committee, which address the applicant's academic ability and potential contribution to the role.

Electa MacLennan Memorial Scholarship

Awarded annually to a current MScN or PhD Student in the School of Nursing, who has previously graduated from the HÂþ»­ University School of Nursing (from either the Baccalaureate or Master’s degree program). Applicants must be accepted as a full-time student or have completed three credits (1/3 of a graduate program) as a part-time student.

Applicants must demonstrate potential for or show active involvement in advancing the nursing profession in Canada. Applicants must submit an essay that clearly states their career and educational goals, and how the programme they are planning to pursue will contribute to their development

Helen Watson Memorial Scholarship

Established to recognize Helen Watson’s lifelong commitment to promoting excellence in community health nursing practice.

Applicants must be enrolled in the PhD (Nursing) program; normally have a minimum GPA of 3.66 in their previous degree; and submit a letter outlining their contribution to nursing leadership, how their research will improve health outcomes in their chosen practice area, and how their research will influence health and social policy to improve health and the health care system in Canada. Three (3) references must be included.

Katherine and Robert MacDonald Award for Excellence in Clinical Nursing Practice

Awarded annually to a full-time or part-time student who is studying in the non-thesis option of the Master of Nursing Program at HÂþ»­ University and who has demonstrated excellence in clinical nursing practice at the end of the first year of study.

Applications must include: A letter of application for the Award; a statement of career goals, and how his/her selected graduate program will contribute to excellence in clinical nursing practice. Three (3) letters of references from referees who can speak to the candidate’s ability to demonstrate excellence in clinical nursing practice. One letter of reference must be from a professor who teaches a clinical nursing course in the MN program.

Lottie Morrison Scholarship

This entrance scholarship is awarded annually to assist a full-time or part-time student entering the Master of Nursing program at HÂþ»­ with the intention of furthering their studies in the areas of mental health. Applicants must forward a letter to the awarding committee, outlining their intentions to further their studies in mental health.

Deadline for applications is August 15.

Margaret Cragg Award

Awarded to one or more full-time or part-time MScN or PhD Nursing students currently enrolled in the School of Nursing and studying in the areas of family or domestic violence against women and/or children, or people living in high risk/disadvantaged environments. Applicants should include a brief description of the proposed work to be done. The proposed study may be in the form of a thesis study or field project for which an analytical report is required. Applicants must include official transcripts of previous university work, as well as 2 Academic and 1 professional reference.

Deadline for applications is October 15.

Margaret Inglis Hagerman (at least 2 scholarships to be awarded)

Awarded annually to one full-time student currently enrolled in the Master of Nursing (Nurse Practitioner or Professional Stream) program and one full-time student currently enrolled in the Master of Science in Nursing Program at HÂþ»­, who have each demonstrated leadership qualities.

Recipients must meet the following criteria: The scholarship recipient will have achieved a high level of academic standing as determined by the awarding committee; the scholarship recipient will have demonstrated leadership qualities as determined by the awarding committee; preference will be given to students from Atlantic Canada.

Masters Leadership Alumni Award

Established by the HÂþ»­ University Nursing Alumni Association, this convocation award is given annually to a graduating student in the Master of Nursing program (Nurse Practitioner or Professional Stream) who has demonstrated significant leadership during her/his years of study. The intent is to recognize a student who models leadership while managing the multiple responsibilities of a Master’s student.

Full-time or part-time students graduating in the Fall or Spring of the current academic year are eligible.

Deadline for applications is April 30.

Parkin Family Nursing Scholarship

Dr. Robert P. Parkin established the scholarship fund as an initiative to assist in the education of well-trained nurse practitioners. This renewable scholarship is awarded to full-time or part-time students entering the Master of Nursing – Nurse Practitioner Stream program. 

The awarding committee will consider students with an outstanding GPA (Minimum 3.3 GPA after first term) who have shown ability, interest, and commitment to work in rural and remote communities.

Upon receiving their grades for the first term, eligible applicants will forward a letter to the awarding committee, demonstrating their interest in and commitment to working in rural and remote communities, and their knowledge of the healthcare needs of those communities.

Ruth May Award

Awarded annually to a full-time or part-time student in the Nurse Practitioner option of the Master of Nursing program at HÂþ»­ University who has demonstrated clinical excellence and professional growth.  All applicants will forward a letter to the awarding committee, stating how the program has contributed to the student's personal and professional growth.

Deadline for Applications is April 30th.

School of Nursing Master of Nursing Scholarship

Awarded annually to a part-time student(s) entering the Master of Nursing Program (Nurse Practitioner or Professional Stream), whose academic background is outstanding and who demonstrates the contribution that they can make to nursing and health care as an outcome of graduate study in nursing. Applicants will submit a letter which outlines the contribution they can make to nursing and health care as an outcome of graduate study in nursing.

Deadline for applications is August 15th.

School of Nursing PhD Scholarship

Awarded annually to a student(s) enrolled in the PhD (Nursing) program, who demonstrates potential for and/or shows active involvement in advancing the nursing profession in Canada.

Students who meet the minimum GPA criteria of 3.66 in a previous degree will be invited to submit a letter of application that outlines the following: Their contribution to nursing leadership in advancing nursing knowledge, nursing theory and practice, and health care policy; how their research will improve health outcomes in their chosen practice area; how their research will influence health and social policy to improve health and the health care system. Three reference letters must be included.

Students are advised to work closely with their supervisor to develop applications for any scholarship or grant.
