How to apply

Each year, the School strongly encourages domestic student applications to be filed by January 31st. To facilitate study permit processing times, the School recommends that international student applications be filed by January 1st. Early applications will receive priority consideration, however, we welcome applications through February and March, if space permits.

Transcripts

  • For your initial application,Ìýwe only require your unofficial academic transcripts for each post-secondary institution you have attended. Please include degree certificates if degree conferral is not stated on your transcripts.
  • If youÌýareÌýaccepted for admission,Ìýyour final and official transcripts will be required within 90 days of the start of your program.
  • Transcripts should be sent toÌýthe Administrative Secretary, Admissions (sres@dal.ca). They should include your first and last name, degree,Ìýprogram type and name of degree issuing university.Ìý

Additional important information:

  • Transcripts are considered official if they come directly to us from the issuing institution, otherwise they are considered unofficial.
  • Transcripts in languages other than English or French must be accompanied by an English translation provided by the institution issuing the transcript.
  • Notarized copies of transcripts are not permitted.
  • Degree and graduation certificates must be included if the transcript does not indicate the type of degree and date granted.Ìý
  • Transcripts submitted with applications become the property of HÂþ»­ University, are subject to verification, are not available for copying and will not be returned to the applicant.
  • Official transcripts are not required for any courses or degrees you have completed at HÂþ»­ University.
  • If your degree is not an honours degree, you should highlight honours equivalencies in your CV and Statement of Interest.
    • Equivalencies that demonstrate independent research capability and may be considered include capstone projects, research internships, academic journal publications, independent study courses, and research work experience.Ìý

Academic Reference Letters

Two academic reference letters

Please submit two letters of reference through HÂþ»­'s electronic reference system. You will be asked to input your reference's contact information on your application. Once you have paid your application fee, please allow 5 business days for your referee(s) to be contacted by our system. If you have made an error in submission of an email address, please contact eref@dal.ca.

If your referee does not have a valid University or government email address, they must fill out the  [PDF - 526kb] and email it to sres@dal.ca. They may include a separate letter, but this is not required. They should NOT include you on the email when submitting. 

  • Applicants who have completed their undergraduate degree within the last three years must submit two academic references. An academic reference is one written by someone who has taught you in a post-secondary course or supervised a significant independent research activity like an Honours or independent project. Applicants should be advised that when assessing reference letters, the committee weighs heavily the opinion of experienced academic referees, i.e. those who have had the opportunity to work with many students at comparable levels. 
  • Applicants who have completed their undergraduate degrees more than 5 years ago may instead provide one academic reference and one relevant professional reference. Applicants who have been out of school for a duration significantly longer than 5 years and who feel they would be disadvantaged by having to identify an academic referee should get in touch.

CV

  • A full curriculum vitae (résumé) highlighting personal academics and work history, publications, awards, fellowships, extra-curricular interests and interdisciplinary experience.

Statement of Interest

  • In a statement not exceeding two pages single spaces, applicants must explain links between career objectives and the MREM program, as well as internship interests. The Statement of Interest should not simply provide a summary of the information already detailed in your CV, but instead should give the Admission Committee a sense of what your goals are for your MREM experience; why MREM? What makes you a good fit for this program? How will this program further your career goals? What internship opportunities are you hoping to explore?

Applicants with English as a second language

Proof of competence in English: Students must provide satisfactory results from a standard language test, such as TOEFL (minimum score of 100 for the internet-based test);  IELTS (7.5 minimum score), CCE (A minimum score), PTE Academic (minimum overall score of 65 and no score below 60), or HÂþ»­'s English for Academic Purposes - Level 2 course (minimum grade of 'A'). Waiver of this regulation in exceptional cases may be considered only after evaluation of the application is complete.

International Students must clearly indicate their source of funding on their application. Applicants may be contacted to provide further documents to show available financial support.

STEP 3. Application review process

Once your application and supporting documents have been received, HÂþ»­ University will verify any information provided by the applicant, including letters of reference and transcripts. The initial application evaluation process is conducted by theÌýSchool for Resource and Environmental Studies, which then makes its recommendation to theÌýFaculty of Graduate Studies, which makes the final decision, and a formal offer of admission is signed and sent out by theÌýRegistrarÌýof HÂþ»­ University.

Generally, students will be advised by the end of March regarding their admission status.

STEP 4. Offer of admission

If you have been accepted to the MREM program, you will receive a letter of acceptance from the Registrar’s Office. A non-refundable admissions deposit of $200 is due within 4 weeks of acceptance. The deposit will be applied to your first-year tuition costs.
