ENSL 0004: English Communication and Academic Skills
This course focuses on learning strategies, language skills, and communication skills to support academic success at university. The course is designed to strengthen academic skills so that students can interact effectively with their course content, colleagues, and instructors. By the end of the course, students will demonstrate competence in specific academic English language and communication skills. This course is a zero-credit course that will appear as Pass/Fail on students’ transcripts. There are no pre-requisites.
Cost: $1,236. For students from the Joint Program (China Program), please consult your program directly regarding the applicable fees. | Time Commitment: 6 hours per week in Fall term only.

ENSL 0005: Academic Writing and Research Skills
This course is designed to strengthen the research and writing skills necessary for students to achieve academic success. The course introduces the fundamentals of research writing, interpretive skills, and argument-based writing, so student writers can detail the reasoning and evidence to support their findings. Students are supported in advancing their academic writing skills, research skills, and presentation skills. The final research paper is presented at a student conference. This course is a zero-credit course that will appear as Pass/Fail on students’ transcript.

Pre-requisite:
ENSL0004 is a pre-requisite for Joint Program (China Program) students from Shandong University of Finance and Economics (SDUFE) and Renmin University of China (RUC). There are no pre-requisites for all other students.
CSCI 1900: Academic Foundations for Computer Science Studies
This course lays the foundations for academic success in computer science studies via development of academic literacies and language skills. In this seminar-style course, students develop the ability to use academic English flexibly, in spoken and written modes, according to the norms of the language practices in computer science studies.
