Volunteer Opportunities

Orientation, training, and ongoing support helps participants to develop their skills as a volunteer. Participant volunteers support the community drop-in room, child development programs, parenting workshops/programs, maintaining public spaces, baking snacks for children, organizing the community cupboard, administrative support, etc. Not all opportunities are available at all times. If you are interested in volunteering at the Centre please fill out an application or talk to Centre staff about your interest.


Positions include: Participate in the development of Healthy Kidz, Healthy Teenz, and/or School Board programming for children, youth and parents, facilitate programming, maintain upkeep of the facility, provide clients with advocacy, information, and agency referrals, administration work.


Opportunities include: new parent support, team possibilities support, Friday night social event member, family camp, board member, fundraising events/organizer, educational support

Volunteering at the nursing home in any capacity, especially one on one visits with the residents. Many are confined to their rooms or don’t have visitors, but are happy to have someone talk with them, play cards, etc. Contact: Christy Nickerson-Rak. Will need to complete a Shannex Volunteer Application Form and a criminal record check.


Help out and assist in various aspects of running the Centre.


Opportunities include: volunteer musician, helping out in recreation activities, spending time engaging with seniors.


Positions include: Big Bike fundraiser (team captain/organizer), canvasser, memorial program volunteer, special events volunteer, being the leader/captain for other fundraising events, health promoter. If interested, send resume to cara.quigley@heartandstroke.ca

Numerous on-going opportunities to get involved in including helping out with social events or being part of an ESL conversation group. There are also special programs that need volunteers such as the International Student Orientations, International Education Week, and Peer Mentorship Program.

The Mi’kmaq Friendship Center is a non-profit, board governed organization with nine core programs, including the Mi’kmaq Child Development Centre and the Mi’kmaq Daycare Program.

The Wee Care Center is a daycare center for people who have children with special needs. Volunteer opportunities include classroom support, kitchen support, and committee work on the Board of Directors.


ISANS is a community organization that welcomes immigrants to Nova Scotia. Offering services that are inclusive and sensitive to diversity, ISANS helps ease the transition to living in Canada. There are various volunteer opportunities available.


The B.E.A.M program creates a volunteer opportunity for students studying in the health professions to work and play with children who have a wide range of both physical (decreased mobility) and cognitive disabilities on a weekly basis.
