Practicum Schedule

Year 1

Audiology

Winter Term: Students complete several observations in the school’s audiology clinic.

Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology

Winter Term: Students participate in a week of preschool speech-language and hearing screenings following the April exam period.

Year 2

Audiology

Fall and Winter Terms: Students complete hands-on practicum experiences in the school's Sheltered Practicum audiology clinic. Students complete a series of practicum observations outside of the school environment that might include surgical, cochlear implant, tinnitus, pediatric, private practice, ENT clinic, auditory process evaluation, etc.

Speech-Language Pathology

Fall Term: Students complete their first practicum placement during the fall term of their 2nd year. They are assigned to a practicum site within Greater Halifax, which consists of 10 half days or five full days of clinical experience.

Winter Term: Students are assigned to a second practicum site within Greater Halifax, consisting of 10 half days or five full days of clinical experience.

The fall and winter term practicum placements use the reciprocal peer coaching model (pair of practicum students observing each other and providing consultative assistance throughout the placement).

Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology

Summer Term: Referred to as the “internship” placement, students are assigned to their first intensive practicum experience during the summer between their 2nd and 3rd years of study. This full-time, 12-week practicum placement takes place within Atlantic Canada and may be scheduled at any time from the end of classes in April to the end of August.

Year 3

Audiology & Speech-Language Pathology

Winter Term: Referred to as the “externship” placement, students complete their final practicum placement in the winter term of their 3rd year of study. This full-time, 12-week placement can be arranged in facilities across Canada or in countries where educational models and professional certification are equivalent to Canadian standards.

The clinical coordinators arrange and confirm all practicum placements within Canada. If a student is interested in a placement that emphasizes cultural and/or linguistic diversity, please speak to the clinical coordinator. Students are not to contact sites independently regarding clinical education experiences.
