Research

  • Health and Human Performance's Matt Numer recently recived two CIHR Grants:
    • ÌýCIHR Catalyst Grant: HIV/AIDS Community Based Research Program - Aboriginal Stream, "Indigenous boys' and men's sexual health: A community inspired framework for culturally-based interventions." $40,000
    • CIHR Operating Grant - HIV/AIDS CBR Program - General "New technologies and chemical culture: Examining deployment and effects among MSM." $447,836
  • Occupational Therapy's Niki Kiepek was awarded a CIHR Patient-Oriented Research Capacity Develoment grant in the amount of $30,000 for the project "Effectively responding to substance use among inpatients."
  • Lois Jackson, School of Health and Human Performance,Ìýhas received a CIHR Operating Grant - HIV/AIDS CBR Program in the amount of $444,073 forÌý"Preventing the spread of HIV: The critical role of addiction treatment services."ÌýHealth and Human Performance's Jacqueline Gahagan, and Occupational Therapy's Niki Kiepek are co-investigators on the project.
  • An interprofessional team from theÌýSchool of Health and Human PerformanceÌýand theÌýFaculty of MedicineÌýhave received the Trainee Award for Innovative Thinking to Support LGBTQI2S Health and Wellness from CIHR. The team members are:
    • Robyn BurnsÌý- MA Candidate, Leisure Studies
    • Kirk FurlotteÌý- MA Candidate, Health Promotion
    • Phillip JoyÌý- PhD Health student
    • Matthew LeeÌý- MD Student

Awards

  • Nursing PhD student Martha Paynter has received the 2018 SWAAC Graduate Student Award of Merit by the Senior Women Academic Administrators of Canada. The award recognizes women who have demonstrated outstanding leadership in their university and in the community while maintaining an exemplary academic record. Martha will be presented with the award at the SWAAC gala on April 27.
  • Martha Paynter has also received the College of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS) Rising Star Award.ÌýRising Star Awards recognize RNs in Nova Scotia who are recent nursing graduates and have exceeded their professional expectations, demonstrated excellence in the application of the CRNNS standards for nursing practice, and have shown early potential to excel at nursing excellence.
  • Nursing's Megan Aston has received theÌýCollege of Registered Nurses of Nova Scotia (CRNNS) Excellence in Nursing Research Award, in recognition of her outstanding contributions to the profession.
  • Robyn Burns, an MA Leisure Studies student in the School of Health and Human Performance, received the Future Scholars Award from the Academy of Leisure Sciences. Robyn was presented with the award at the Academy's conference in Indianapolis in February.
  • Michael Hadskis, School of Health Administration, recived the Schulich School of Law's Hanna and Harold Barnett Award for Excellece in Teaching First Year Law.
