Auditing a Course

Any student who wishes to audit a course must follow the procedures as outlined below.  Master's students may only audit a course in their first three terms (i.e., their residency period).  Ph.D. students may only audit courses in their first six terms (i.e., their residency period). Registration for an audit is available from the first day of courses until the last day to add a course. Students auditing courses will not be eligible to write examinations in the course and will not in any circumstances be granted credit for it. Fees are payable as indicated under Fees and a course may not be changed from credit to audit or from audit to credit status after the last date for dropping classes without a “W”.
A student auditing a course is expected to attend the course, but is not expected to prepare assignments, write papers, tests or examinations. They do not receive credit for the course, but it does appear on their transcript with the notation “AUD”.

  1. Students should discuss their plan to audit a course with their supervisor.
  2. Students may take one audit (equivalent of six credit hours) in each residency year of their formal program. Audits must be listed as program requirements in GSIS, must be relevant to the student's program of study, and must have academic unit and the Faculty of Graduate Studies approval. For program-fee students, audits not approved as part of their program of study will be subject to additional tuition on the student's account. Per-course fee students will be charged the normal audit tuition for each audit registration. Audits cannot be taken on a Letter of Permission and will not be approved as part of a Qualifying program.
  3. Audits are processed after the last day of registration and are based on classroom availability. Just because you follow these steps does not guarantee that your audit will be approved.
