Our Vision

The Faculty of Engineering’s vision is to contribute to the growth of an equitable, diverse and inclusive engineering profession.

We recognize that this vision can only be met if current and future engineers better reflect and appreciate the diverse populations they serve. This requires concrete action to overcome barriers within our educational institutions and profession for women, BIPOC, LGBTQ2SIA+, persons with disabilities and those experiencing intersectionality who historically may not have considered engineering as an accessible option.

HÂþ» University is committed to equity, diversity, and inclusion as principles of excellence in learning, research, teaching and service. We are located in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral and unceded territory of the Mi’kmaq, and we are all Treaty people. HÂþ» also recognizes African Nova Scotians as distinct people who have helped shape this province and University over centuries. We celebrate the integral role and contributions of all people of African descent.

We recognize that we must learn from our past in order to create a truly equitable institution today for future generations.

As a Faculty, we strive to offer the supports needed to ensure that our faculty, staff and students all have the opportunity to be successful. It requires that our graduates possess strong communication skills, historical context of how engineers have engaged communities in the past, and an inclusive mindset and willingness to challenge personal perceptions and bias. We have a responsibility to incorporate diverse perspectives in our curriculum to encourage personal reflection, and to provide opportunities for our students, staff and faculty to actively contribute to a welcoming, inclusive and engaging environment

"HÂþ»'s Faculty of Engineering is committed to fostering an environment of equity, diversity, and inclusion where all members of our community succeed, thrive, contribute, and benefit from different perspectives. I often get asked what engineers do, and my first answer is that we apply science and math to solve problems. Engineers figure out how things work and turn ideas into reality, using creativity, teamwork, and communication skills to make the world a better place. Including and valuing people and diversity is an essential part of this mission."Ìý - Dr. Amyl Ghanem PhD, PEng. Assistant Dean, Diversity and Inclusion she/her/hers
