Oral and Maxillofacial Internship

The internship in oral and maxillofacial surgery will provide additional exposure and training in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

Program of study

This internship is a one-year graduate training program that will provide additional exposure and training in oral and maxillofacial surgery. The program uses the facilities of the Queen Elizabeth II Health Sciences Centre and the IWK Health Centre, both located in Halifax.

One student per year is accepted into the program. Applications must be received by August 31 for a June 1 start the following year.

Through the internship, students will be introduced and exposed to dentoalveolar surgery, surgical correction of dentofacial deformities, cleft lip and palate, maxillofacial trauma, and other surgery as it pertains to the specialty.

Starting requirements

To be eligible to apply for the internship in oral and maxillofacial surgery, applicants should meet the following starting requirements:

  • A doctor of dental surgery (DDS) or doctor of dental medicine (DMD) degree.
  • A National Dental Examining Board (NDEB) certificate.
  • A student dental license for the province of Nova Scotia. This will probably be obtained during the first month of the internship. Observation privileges will be granted until the license is obtained.
  • Malpractice insurance with CDSPI.
  • Basic life support (BLS) certification.
  • Advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) certification. This can be organized to take place during the first month of the internship.
  • Acceptance into all programs within the Faculty of Dentistry and the School of Dental Hygiene is normally conditional upon receipt of a completed . Ìý

Admission requirements

In addition to the application form, applicants must submit the following documentation by August 31:
  • Original transcript of all previous academic work.
  • Two academic letters of reference. The letters should be in sealed envelopes with the referee's signature over the seal.
  • A letter from the dean of the graduating dental school indicating the applicant's standing in the class during the four years of the program.
  • A curriculum vitae, including information about the applicant's academic background and work/volunteer experience.
  • A personal statement outlining the applicant's reasons for interest in an internship in oral and maxillofacial surgery.Ìý

The application deadline is August 31 of the year before the internship begins. The application fee is $70.
