Strategic Plan: 2021‑2026: Progress so far

Posted by Cheryl Bell on April 14, 2025 in News

The Faculty of Dentistry’s Strategic Plan for 2021-2026 is now approaching its final year and there has been progress on many fronts, which you can read about in ourÌý.Ìý
Ìý
Pillar 1: Exceptional academic experience
We have Maritime Provinces Higher Education Council (MPHEC) approval to change the exit credential of our diploma in dental hygiene to a bachelor of dental hygiene, and our current bachelor of hygiene to a bachelor of dental hygiene with honours. A new dental assisting program has also received MPHEC approval and other programs are currently being updated. We also continue to seek new learning opportunities for our students, including rotations and observations at a growing number of outreach clinics, hospitals, and clinics around the Maritime Provinces.

Pillar 2: A strong culture of inquiry and impact
Our Faculty of Dentistry is striving to create an environment in which research flourishes through changes to our curriculum, new research fellowships and electives, and the wider development of international collaborations and other external partnerships. Research funds for 2023/24 of $2.8 million more than doubled the $1.26 million administered in 2022/23. An annual Research Day highlights current research in our Faculty of Dentistry.Ìý

Pillar 3: Serve regional and local communities through increased opportunities for community outreach
We are forming links with organizations that care for traditionally underserved communities to help connect their clients to our outreach clinics and to improve access to quality care for underrepresented populations and remote communities, including the Eskasoni Dental Clinic in Cape Breton and PEI public health clinic in Charlottetown. International partnerships for student recruitment and academic exchange, including with the Kuwait Cultural Office and the International Medical University in Malaysia, are also being strengthened.
Ìý
Pillar 4: Investing in our culture and people
Equipping our faculty members with the skills to provide excellent teaching, learning, and student assessment is central to our work. We offer a wide range of Continuing Professional Education opportunities to ensure that staff and faculty are well equipped to meet the needs of our students and patients. Several initiatives are aimed at recruiting dynamic and diverse staff and faculty members who can meet the future growth of our Faculty of Dentistry.
Ìý
We are already looking ahead to the goals and objectives that will form the basis of our new strategic plan, which will be aligned with HÂþ» University’s broader strategic objectives. We look forward to consulting with all our stakeholders about their hopes and vision for the future of our Faculty of Dentistry.
