On Wednesday, August 28, the Faculty of Dentistry hosted its second annual softball tournament. Six teams representing students, faculty and staff took part in this smash success at the nearby Gorsebrook and St. Francis fields.
At St. Francis, DDS4 team defeated DDS3 12-7; the team of students from Utah and staff from the Paediatric Dentistry department at the IWK defeated DDS3 13-5; and Utah/IWK defeated DDS4 9-0, giving them the division title. At Gorsebrook, a team of first year Dentistry and Dental Hygiene students defeated DDS2 14-8; DDS2 defeated Faculty/Staff 18-4; and the First Years defeated Faculty/Staff 10-3, giving them the division title.
This year’s Mystery Championship Challenge tested the speed and agility of the two division champions, as they had to ferry big bowls of water around the bases in a relay format with just a 90-second time limit. The team with the most water left would be declared the tournament champion. The First-Years speedily rounded the bases in 54 seconds. Meanwhile, Utah/IWK tried the “slow and steady†approach and were disqualified ten feet from home plate when their time limit expired. Congratulations to DDS1 and DH1, who demonstrated excellent skill, teamwork and sportsmanship!
The Faculty of Dentistry would like to thank and acknowledge Scotiabank (Coburg & Robie), who hosted a BBQ on-site with proceeds headed to the Faculty of Dentistry’s United Way campaign; The Live 105 R.I.O.T. Squad for the on-site entertainment, and all of the volunteers who helped to make this event possible.
