2023 Stanfield Conversation

Stanfield 2023: Can Democracies Meet the Challenge of Climate Change?

For 2023, our panelists explored the policy challenges associated with climate change, and the question of whether and how democracies were equipped to meet those challenges. Do democratic institutions have the capacity to generate and sustain desperately-needed policy innovation, or are policy-makers too fixated on short-term electoral risks? Have the key democratic institutions been captured by powerful interest groups who put profit ahead of sustainability? Or does democracy provide pathways for grassroots organizing that can overcome those entrenched interests? Does the global scale of the climate crisis mean that national policy choices don’t matter as much, and if so how do we overcome the democratic deficits in global governance?

Mark Jaccard, Megan Leslie, and Naheed Nenshi

The panelists for the 2023 Stanfield Conversation were SFU professor Mark Jaccard, World Wildlife Fund CEO Megan Leslie, and former Calgary mayor Naheed Nenshi. Our moderator was CBC host and Dal alum Jeff Douglas.

Stanfield Fellows & Master Class

The Stanfield Fellows for 2023 were Profs. Kiran Banerjee and Scott Pruysers. They helped plan the Stanfield Conversation event and organized a Master Class for HÂþ» graduate students.
