Honours in LJSO


LJSO Honours Program Checklist


Are you interested in taking honours in LJSO?

If you are thinking of taking Concentrated Honours or Combined Honours in LJSO, this is what you need to know:

1.ÌýÌýÌýÌý Apply for Honours after you have received your grades for your Winter term courses (April of your third year). ÌýYour average GPA in the core and elective LJSO courses (i.e., excluding outside electives and other general BA requirements, such as in the sciences or languages) should beÌý3.3 or above. Some exceptions and leeway may be possible. If you have any questions with respect to your eligibility, please consult the LJSO Program Coordinator (LJSO@dal.ca) before submitting your application.

2.ÌýÌýÌýÌý For Honours program requirements, see /faculty/arts/law-justice-society/programs.html. You need a grade of C or above in each course that counts toward your BA Honours.

3.ÌýÌýÌýÌý You must discuss your honours plans with the LJSO Coordinator. FASS honours application forms must be signed or counter-signed (in the case of combined honours) by the LJSO Coordinator. The Deadline to submit the (PDF format; contact LJSO@dal.ca if you require a Word version.) for Law, Justice & Society is May 15th (before the start of your final year). Submit your form to LJSO@dal.ca.

If LJSO will be your primary Honours subject (either a BA with Concentrated Honours in LJSO, or a BA with Combined Honours with Emphasis in LJSO) the following also apply:

4.ÌýÌýÌýÌý After you have been accepted to the Honours Program you must enroll in LJSO 0400.00(Fall) and LJSO 4000.03(Winter) in your final year of study.

5.ÌýÌýÌýÌý You will be required to write a Thesis and will need an Honours Advisor/Supervisor. You are required to secure your own, who will ideally be a researcher in an area of study you are interested in. They do not need to be a member of the Faculty of Arts & Social Sciences. This should be done before you apply for Honours and students are strongly encouraged to have an agreement with your potential supervisor by April of your third year of study.

6.ÌýÌýÌýÌý You should have a topic for your Honours thesis (agreed with advisor/supervisor). The topic can be summary and provisional when you apply to Honours, but the area of your thesis needs to be quite specific by the time you submit your thesis application form to LJSO. The Deadline for submitting the (PDF format; contact LJSO@dal.ca if you require a Word version) is October 1st of your final year. Submit your form to LJSO@dal.ca.
Note
: If your honours emphasis is in a different subject, you do not write a thesis for LJSO, and no thesis form is required. You may be required to write a thesis in your other subject.
