The McCall MacBain Scholarship

The are Canada’s first leadership-driven scholarship for master’s and professional degree students. They represent an investment in students who are developing expertise in their respective fields, have a track record of taking initiative, and seek to collaborate with others to understand and address important problems and challenges.
As Canada’s largest leadership-based scholarships for master’s and professional studies, each scholarship covers tuition and fees for an eligible degree, a living stipend of $2,300 per month during academic terms, summer funding options, mentorship, coaching, a leadership curriculum, and access to the McCall MacBain House. A relocation grant is provided for scholars originating from outside of Montreal.
Dr. John McCall MacBain and Dr. Marcy McCall MacBain announced the creation of the McCall MacBain Scholarships in February 2019 througha , the single largest gift in Canadian history.

Our 2025 McCall MacBain Scholarship finalists and Regional Award recipients
H University congratulates Microbiology and Immunology student Sarah Rondeaux (BSc'25) and Social Anthropology and International Development Studies graduate Michelle Wang (BA'24), who have been named as finalists for the 2025 McCall MacBain Scholarships at McGill.
The two finalists will travel to Montreal to attend final interviews in March, with travel expenses covered by the scholarship program.
Sarah and Michelle are among 52 Canadian finalists chosen from approximately 700 applicants after a first round of interviews. The selection process emphasizes holistic criteria such as character, community engagement, leadership potential, entrepreneurial spirit, academic strength, and intellectual curiosity.
Sarah Rondeaux is a student majoring in Microbiology and Immunology. She serves as the director of Ppersonnel for the , managing volunteer schedules and advising supervisors on effective response protocols. She volunteers as an advanced medical first responder with St. John Ambulance, teaches first aid courses as an instructor with Lifesaving Society NS, and assists with a non-profit pharmacy. During the summers, Sarah worked as a junior lifeguard coach and head of aquatics at a local club. Previously, she was a Girl Guide for 13 years. “I feel very grateful and honoured to have been selected as a finalist for the McCall MacBain Scholarship,” says Sarah. “I’m excited to meet everyone at the final interviews and looking forward to this unique opportunity.” Sarah is applying to master's programs in Public Health and Biomedical Engineering at McGill.
Michelle Wang recently graduated from H with a Bachelor of Arts with Combined Honours in Social Anthropology and International Development Studies. She is working as a research assistant. Michelle co-led the H/King's (WUSC) local committee, a program supporting refugee students, and spent a summer researching non-governmental interventions for refugees in Jordan. She also contributed to the Dal Zero divestment campaign and wrote articles for Her Campus, a student publication. In previous summers, she worked for several heritage museums and researched food insecurity among international students. Michelle wrote her honours thesis on food and cultural identity among second-generation immigrants in Halifax. “It feels surreal to be a finalist for the McCall MacBain Scholarship! I’m honoured to be among a cohort of individuals who have done such incredible work in their schools and communities, and I’m very excited to meet and learn from the other finalists,” says Michelle. Michelle is applying for master's programs in Sociology and East Asian Studies. She is interested in identity, migration, and economic justice.
During their visit to Montreal, Sarah and Michelle will participate in interviews with leaders from academia, business, government, and the social sector. Up to 30 McCall MacBain Scholars will be selected after final interviews. Finalists not selected for the cohort will be eligible to receive $10,000 or $20,000 for their studies at McGill.
Regional Award recipients
Two more H students were recognized for their community engagement, each earning a $5,000 McCall MacBain Regional Award tenable at any public university in Canada.
Health Promotion student Laura Colford (BHP’25) co-chairs the Halifax Central Community Health Board, which advocates for health and wellness initiatives, and took on on-site supervisor responsibilities in her previous work with the Canadian Longitudinal Study of Aging. She also holds another part-time campus job and contributes to "Threaded Together" Makers Collective, a collaborative local clothing business. Last summer, as a research assistant, she co-authored an academic paper on older LGBTQ+ adults' social health and use of digital platforms. Laura is applying for master's programs in Sociology, Public Health, and Social Policy.
Neuroscience graduate Ernest Ng (BSc’23) manages the SURGE Innovation Hub and was named one of Atlantic Business Magazine's Under 30 Innovators for 2024. He volunteers with the Nova Scotia Health Research Ethics Board and leads Halifax emergency response unit logistics for St. John Ambulance. Ernest led the operations of Atlantic Canada's largest student-led campus medical response team, coordinated student outreach activities, and volunteered at COVID-19 rapid testing sites. The recipient of the David & Ruth Hubel Undergraduate Neuroscience Prize, he undertook research projects investigating motor learning and motor function. Ernest is applying for master's programs in public health and health sciences.

How to apply
Eligibility
To be eligible to apply for the 2026 cohort, you must meet ONE of the following criteria:
- You are a current student on track to earn your first bachelor's degree by August 2026
- You earned your first bachelor's degree in the last five years
- You earned your first bachelor's degree more than five years ago, and are 30 years or younger in 2025
You will also need to meet the for McGill master's program admission.

- You also need to apply directly to McGill for at least one. Program admission requirements and timelines vary, so please research the ones that interest you. We will ask you to apply by the first deadline for Fall admission, or by mid-December at the latest if you are selected for final interviews.
Please note: current university students and recent graduates must have their application endorsed by their institution. After you complete your application, it will be submitted to the university for review.
