WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching the field and lab intensive course, BIOL 3630.03, “Field Methods in Animal Behaviour”. The course will be offered in the Summer session, July 4 - July 21, 2016, Monday to Friday, approx. 0835-1625. Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures, field trips, test preparation, and evaluation of tests and reports. The part-time academic will also be responsible for preparing a budget in consultation with the program director, and keeping field-related expenses within the approved budget. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates in preparation for the course and marking assignments.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or related field and research experience in Animal Behaviour. Up-to-date Standard First Aid and CPR certification and a driver’s license valid in Nova Scotia. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D. and/or previous university teaching experience in the subject of the course.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic(s) will be responsible for co-teaching the 6-credit hour, field intensive course, BIOL 3640.06, “Tropical Ecology and Biodiversity”. The course will be offered in the Summer session, April 25-May 25, 2016, and will meet essentially all day every day during this period. Responsibilities of the teaching team will include all aspects of teaching the course, including lectures, field trips, test preparation, and evaluation of tests and reports. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates in preparation for the course and marking assignments. This course will spend 18 days in Belize, Central America during which time, along with other co-instructors, the part-time academic will be responsible for the students 24 hours a day, both en route to Belize and in Belize.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or related field, research experience in Ecology and/or Biodiversity, with an emphasis in one or more of the following: plants, terrestrial and/or marine animals, ecosystems and communities, and plant-animal interactions. Up-to-date Standard First Aid and CPR certification. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D., and/or previous experience teaching university field courses, especially in topics relevant to the course, and research experience in tropical forest, freshwater or marine ecology or biodiversity.

The part-time instructor will be responsible specifically for co-teaching the Belize field part of the course during May 5-21, 2016. Responsibilities include providing lectures, leading field trips, research project supervision, and evaluation of field notebooks. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates in preparation for the course and marking assignments. Along with other co-instructors, the part-time academic will be responsible for the students 24 hours a day when in Belize.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or related field, research experience in tropical ecology, biodiversity, and conservation biology. Local knowledge about the ecology, biodiversity of plants and animals, and conservation issues in Belize. Up-to-date Standard First Aid and CPR certification. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D. and/or previous experience teaching students in the subject matter.

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for co-teaching BIOL/ENVS/GEOG 3633.03, “GIS in Ecology”. The course will be offered in the Summer session, June 13-28, 2016, and will meet Mon-Sat, approx. 0835-1625. The part-time academic will be responsible for the field project part of the course. Specific responsibilities are: (1) the safety and well-being of students during the 5-days spent at the Harrison Lewis Centre, Port Joli, NS, from June 20-24; (2) designing and managing the field projects, in consultation with the primary course instructor, Jennifer Strang, H GIS centre; (3) introducing the field projects during the first week of course; (4) preparing a budget in consultation with the program director, and keeping field-related expenses within this budget; (5) planning meals for the 5 days and procuring the food; (6) driving students in 7-passenger vehicles rented by the university; and (7) attending and assisting in the evaluation o! f the student project presentations on June 28. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time BEFORE the official start date to design the field projects, prepare necessary materials, organize supplies, and arrange field logistics.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or related field and research experience. Up-to-date (within last 3 years) Standard First Aid and CPR certification and driver’s license valid in Nova Scotia. Preference will be given to candidates with coursework and research experience in landscape ecology and use of Geographic Information Systems to answer ecological questions.

POSITION: Part-time Academic

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching the field and lab intensive BIOL 2605.03, section 1, “Marine Life of Nova Scotia”. The course will be offered in the Summer session, July 17-31, 2016, and will meet every day, Sunday through Saturday, approx. 0905 1655. Responsibilities include all aspects of teaching and administering the course, including lectures, field trips, test preparation, and evaluation of tests and reports. The part-time academic will be responsible for students at all times of the day for several days while off campus at the Harrison Lewis Centre field station near Port Joli, NS. The part-time academic is responsible for preparing a budget in consultation with the program director, and keeping field-related expenses within the approved budget. In addition, the part-time academic will be responsible for driving students in vehicles rented by the university. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable t! ime before and after the official course dates preparing and marking.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or related field and research experience directly related to the topic of the course. Up-to-date (within last 3 years) Standard First Aid and CPR certification and driver’s license valid in Nova Scotia. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D. and/or previous university teaching experience in the subject of the course.

The part-time academic will also be responsible for preparing a budget in consultation with the SEASIDE program director, and keeping lab and field-related expenses within the approved budget. The part-time academic should expect to spend considerable time before and after the official course dates preparing and marking.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: An advanced degree in Biology or related field and considerable experience with the biology and identification of algae. Up-to-date (within last 3 years) Standard First Aid and CPR certification. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D. and/or previous university teaching experience in the subject of the course.
