The Learn to Run for Smokers program is an eight-week training program to increase smokers’ fitness ability so that they are able to complete a 5km walk/run at the end. There is a smoking cessation aspect to the program, as well as educational presentations on topics such as running techniques, equipment, nutrition, the benefits of exercise, and yoga and stretching.
The program aims to promote physical fitness, to improve confidence levels in their ability to achieve specific goals, and to promote smoking cessation by helping the individual develop personal motivation to become tobacco free based on their experiences in the program. The program is based on behavioral modification; when smokers start to improve their lifestyle and activity levels, they will want to be healthier and become tobacco free.
