New this year at HÂþ» are two ESL (English as a Second Language) courses. In ENSL 0004 and ENSL 0005 undergraduate or graduate students whose first language is not English can gain and practice the language skills they need for academic success.

ENSL 0004: English Communication and Academic Skills for International Students is a seminar series focussing on learning strategies and practicing skills to support academic success. Consisting of two 3-hour seminars per week in the Fall term, this course is designed to strengthen academic skills such that students can interact effectively with their course content, colleagues, and instructors. The seminars follow a process-product model whereby specific skills are addressed each week: each week, students demonstrate competence in those skills. This course is a zero-credit course that will appear as Pass/Fail on your transcript.

ENSL 0005: Academic Writing and Research Skills for International Students is seminar series focussing on Writing and Research skills. Consisting of two 3-hour seminars per week in the Winter term, this course is designed to strengthen the research and writing skills necessary for students to achieve academic success. The seminars are developmental in that the weekly assignments have the students learn about and practice specific skills, leading to them to write a quality paper. The final paper is presented at a student conference. ENSL 0004 is not a pre-requisite for this course. This course is a zero-credit course that will appear as Pass/Fail on your transcript.
