PAY RATE:Ìý In accordance with CUPE Collective Agreement for two consecutive half-credit classes, fall and winter

WORK ASSIGNMENT: The part-time academic will be responsible for teaching the Biology laboratory component of SCIE 1505.18, Integrated Science (see disp.science.dal.ca), from September 2013-April 2014.Ìý Responsible for Biology-component labs and related hands-on activities, every Friday in both terms. Responsibilities include: preparing a lab manual and posting it online; working through lab exercises with TAs; holding weekly meetings with TAs; preparing TAs for Biology-component laboratories; providing an in-lab introduction to each exercise; hiring and supervising the DISP Biology TAs (TAs/ Markers/ Demonstrators); recruiting additional casual TAs as needed; overseeing marking (providing marking key and reviewing marked papers); posting marks on OWL; coordinating lab room use; directing the lab technician to collect and organizeÌý materials and supplies; preparing a budget, in consultation with the program director, for TAs and laboratory supplies; keeping expenses within the approved budget; and attending, teaching, and providing logistical help for Friday afternoon field trips. Requires advance preparation to develop and test laboratory exercises.

REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION: A graduate degree in Biology or related field with expertise in Physiology, Cell Biology, Genetics, and/or Evolution. Experience using OWL for posting class content and marks. Up-to-date First Aid and CPR certification. Preference will be given to candidates possessing a Ph.D., and/or previous experience teaching introductory Biology laboratories to first-year BSc students within the context of interdisciplinary science.
