Men’s Hockey

It was a make or break weekend for the Tigers season, which saw the boys come up just short. The men’s hockey team had two must-win home games over the weekend but would only could come away with two points.

On Friday night the Tigers hosted the St. Thomas Tommies and managed to grab a 4-1 win. Tanner Williams and Andrew Wigginton both found the back of the net in the first period. The 2-0 lead would hold until the third period when Brendan Childerley made things interesting cutting the deficit to 2-1.

Andrew Rieder and Tanner Williams both added empty net tallies in the final minutes for a final score of 4-1.

Saturday night the Tigers lined up against the UdeM Aigles Bleus who led the Tigers by just two points in the AUS standings. Adrien Lemay was phenomenal in UdeM’s 2-0 win, stopping all 42 shots he faced.

Jean-Francois Plante scored in the opening five minutes of the game putting the Aigles Bleus up 1-0.

Victor Beaulac added a goal in the third period.

The Tigers played well, outshooting the Aigles Bleus 42-29 but could not beat the red-hot Lemay.

With just two games left in the regular season the Tigers have been officially eliminated from the AUS playoffs. The Tigers next action will come on Wednesday, February 10 at the Halifax Forum when they play the host Saint Mary’s Huskies.

Women’s Basketball

The women’s basketball team split a two-game set with the Memorial Sea-Hawks over the weekend in St. John’s, Newfoundland. In the first of two games, the Tigers cruised to a 62-55 win while they suffered a 80-77 OT loss in the second meeting.

HÂþ» had a strong start to the game on Saturday night leading 35-22 at the half, but the Sea-Hawks outscored the Tigers 22-10 in the third cutting the deficit to one point heading into the fourth quarter.

A strong defensive fourth quarter led the Tigers to a 62-55 victory.

Ainsley MacIntrye put up a game high 19 points and grabbed seven rebounds for the Tigers on Saturday night.

The two teams were back at it on Sunday afternoon with the Sea-Hawks coming out on top in this one. Memorial took a three-point lead into the fourth quarter but the Tigers managed to battle back and force overtime.

The Sea-Hawks edged the Tigers out in the overtime frame putting up eight points to the Tigers five.

Once again it was MacIntrye leading the Tigers with 14 points and nine rebounds.

Men’s Basketball

The men’s basketball team came away with two points on their road trip to St. John’s, Newfoundland. On Saturday night the boys downed the Memorial Sea-Hawks 83-78 but came up short on Sunday afternoon, losing 73-65.

HÂþ» came out flying on Saturday evening, putting up 29 points in the first quarter, opening up a double digit lead after one. The production slowed big time as the Sea-Hawks outscored the Tigers in all three of the following quarters but the early deficit was too much to conquer.

Ritchie Kanza Mata continued to tear up the AUS falling just short of a triple-double with 23 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Sven Stammberger was hot as well putting up 18 points.

On Sunday afternoon the Tigers offence seemed to dry up. The Tigers couldn’t buy a bucket going 25-70 from the floor in the 73-65 loss. A strong third quarter by the Sea-Hawks propelled them to their sixth win of the year.

After the weekend, the Tigers still control sole possession of first place in the AUS with a four-point lead over the UPEI Panthers. HÂþ» will look to add another win to their record on Friday, February 12 when they host the Cape Breton Capers.

Mati Barrett was solid in the Tigers cage stopping 39 of 41 shots she faced.

On Sunday night in Charlottetown, the Tigers managed to snap a four-game losing streak, beating the UPEI Panthers 3-2.

After giving up the first goal of the game, the Tigers scored two quick second-period markers to take the lead. Laura Brooks netted her second of the night and the game winner in the third period.
