Track and Field

The Tigers women’s track and field team captured their 25th consecutive AUS championship this weekend, edging out the StFX X-Women by 18 points. Rebecca Haworth earned her fourth AUS Female Student-Athlete Community Service Award in as many years, remaining the only person to receive the honour, since its inception. Haworth also claimed her fourth consecutive high jump title, jumping 1.78m to earn gold and set new AUS and Dal records. Haworth was also named the AUS women’s track athlete of the year to top it all off.

The Tigers men’s track and field team received a crushing blow when they failed to win their 13th consecutive AUS title, falling to the rising StFX X-Men by 30 points. Second-year triple jump star Jordan Bruce, who won gold in the men’s 60m hurdles, was named the AUS male track athlete of the year, while Chas Smith, who captured the men’s triple jump title, setting a new AUS record, was named the AUS male rookie of the year. He also won the long jump.

Swimming

The Tigers swim teams travelled to the University of Toronto to compete in the 2014 Speedo CIS Swimming Championships, looking to make some noise as both teams were ranked in the top ten heading into the championships.

This also marked the end of David Sharpe’s illustrious career with the black and gold. Sharpe ended his career on a high note with a silver medal in the 50m backstroke, and a bronze medal in the 200m butterfly to go along with fourth and sixth place finishes in the 100m and 200m backstroke events. He won 13 CIS medals in his five-year career with the Tigers, including three gold, five silver and five bronze. Kyle Watson notched a top ten finish placing seventh in the men’s 400m freestyle, while women’s star Molly Wedge finished sixth in the 100m freestyle.

Meagan Bernier and Katie Webster both had great weekends, placing seventh and sixth in the 400m and ninth and fifth in the 800m freestyle events, respectively.
