There weren't enough chairs in the MacAloney Room to seat the crowd that came out for the H Music Department's 24th-annual Student Musicale on Sunday, January 19. Regardless, with plastic chairs lining the room for overflow, the afternoon concert did not disappoint in terms of talent.
The event was jointly sponsored by the Dal Music Department and the Women's Division of the Dal Alumni Association. It featured the talents of eight Dal Music students, both as soloists and in chamber groups, performing pieces they have been working on for their recitals in April. Following the concert was an open reception for the audience, faculty, Women's Division members and students to meet each other and enjoy refreshments.
The Women's Division of the Dal Alumni Association, established in 1909, organized the concert as its main fundraising initiative for student scholarships and awards. All ticket proceeds from the showcase went to the WDDAA Bursary/Scholarship Fund, which provides financial support for deserving students.
“It's a great way for the students to give back,” said Peter Allen, associate professor of the Department of Music. Allen, who accompanied many soloists on piano at the musicale, highlighted that all students who performed did so on a volunteer basis and on top of their regular workload.
“This event is a wonderful collaboration,” echoed Margaret Cameron, current president of the Women's Division. “The high level of music provided by the students is a tribute to their talent, their hard work and the support and direction they receive from committed faculty members.”
Student performers at the Musicale were: Janessa Stang (piano), Benjamin Marmen (cello), Ria Kim (piano) Michael Fabro (guitar), Katherine Harrison (mezzo soprano), Benjamin Shaw (tenor), Mehdi Karbasi (piano), Artem Kolesov (violin), Barbara Pritchard (piano).
A magnificent musicale
