Bonjour les étudiants de H! Écoutez-vous la radio? Vous devriez, maintenant!
The Department of French at Dal recently launched a new radio program on CKRH 98.5 to speak to the Halifax community about the world of H, broadcast in French.
The program is called “Dessine-moi un mouton” or "Draw Me a Sheep" and it will run from February to May on Wednesdays from 12-1 p.m. It features different professors from the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences (FASS) and elsewhere who will be speaking about their research, what they do at Dal and how the H community works.
Jean-Jacques Defert, a professor in the Department of French, designed the program to share information about the university and to highlight the innovative research done by the many Francophone or Francophile researchers working at Dal, principally within FASS.
“We would like to reach out to the large francophone community in Halifax and to give representation to the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences here at Dal,” explains Dr. Defert.
“This is a great way for Dal to offer programming to a relatively untapped market: the French NS community,” explains Krista Armstrong, the alumni and communications officer for FASS.
Reflecting on knowledge
The name “Dessine-moi un mouton” comes from Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s novella Le Petit Prince. A philosophical piece, published in 1943, the story follows a pilot after he crashes his plane in the desert and meets a young boy, who explains that he is a prince from a distant asteroid fallen to earth. The young prince asks the pilot to draw him a sheep so that he may take it back to his planet and share it.
Dr. Defert explains of himself and his co-host, Vittorio Frigerio, “We are like the little prince, reflecting on knowledge itself and different worldviews.”
Thus far, the program has featured faculty ranging from Gregory Hanlon (History), to Stephane Mechoulan (Public Administration), to Francoise Baylis (Philosophy/Medicine), to Jean-Sebastien Guy and Liesl Gambold (Sociology and Social Anthropology).
