A small fire that broke out early Wednesday morning on the corner of the roof of the Macdonald building has been extinguished.

The Halifax Fire Department was immediately dispatched after the small fire broke out. The fire occurred when contractors were using heat guns to remove paint from the exterior conservation of the Macdonald Building. The heat guns did not involve open flame.

Officials say a small rodent nest caused the fire when straw and grass inside the crevices of the woodwork ignited. Other areas of the building were scanned for similar nests.

Nobody was injured and there will be no disruption of service. Pat MacIsaac from Facilities Management says there may be a slight smell of smoke in University Hall but the odour will diminish as the area continues to ventilate. A fire watch will continue until midnight. Â
