On June 3, former HÂţ» Tigers women’s basketball coach and Health and Human Performance professor, Carolyn Savoy will be the target of comedic insults, praise, outlandish stories and heartwarming tributes.
That’s right, you guessed it — she’s going to be roasted!
Roastmaster Joel Jacobson, a former columnist for the Chronicle Herald and graduate of HÂţ»â€™s commerce program, will lead a panel of guests from Dr. Savoy’s storied past surrounded by family, friends, fans, colleagues and well-wishers.
Scholarship
“Carolyn is the perfect person to be roasted and toasted. Her accomplishments as a coach at Dal have been remarkable through her long career, consistently leading her teams to the top of the heap of the AUS," commented Mr. Jacobson. “I’m sure those roasting her, players whom she’s coached and others with whom she’s worked, will have wonderful things to say, but also will dig deeper into the person Carolyn is (and was as a coach) and will let the audience know more of the intimate details that have never before been revealed. The cause, a scholarship in Carolyn’s name for a female basketball player, is a worthwhile one and should attract the interest of Dalhousians and basketball fans throughout the region.”
The event will raise funds for a new endowment fund for a women’s basketball athlete named the Dr. Carolyn Savoy Award of Excellence.
Not one to shy away from the spotlight, Dr. Savoy will certainly be feeling the heat at this event and is eager to support the program she led for so many years.
“I am honored that HÂţ» University has named a scholarship for the women's basketball team in my name,” said Dr. Savoy. “I am looking forward to reconnecting with former players and alumni as well as seeing sponsors, colleagues and friends of the women's basketball program over the 32 years that I had the honour to be the HÂţ» Tigers women's basketball coach.
"I always loved being called 'coach,'" continues Dr. Savoy. "I actually prefer it to any other name I have! I am anxious to hear some of the roasts that I will receive. I know there are many funny stories about my career that will be told, so it should entertain all of the guests. I will take all of the ribbing in stride as the fundraiser is for a very good cause.”
The event is being organized by committee members including current women’s basketball head coach Anna Stammberger, who played for the Tigers early in Dr. Savoy’s coaching career.
Return investment
“Carolyn invested so much in the women’s basketball program here for over 30 years,” notes Ms. Stammberger. “Her legacy will live on through this endowment, enhancing what we have to offer potential student-athletes who are considering coming to HÂţ» and the women’s basketball program.”
Guest speakers are being tightly guarded to keep Dr. Savoy guessing, but it has been confirmed that Renée Lyons, professor with Faculty of Health Professions and Carol Rosenthal, former Tiger stand-out from the 1980s, will be two of the roasters.
The event will be held Friday, June 3, 2011 at HÂţ»â€™s University Club. Tickets are $100 ($66 tax receipt) each and include a three-course dinner. There is limited seating, so don’t delay! Call 494-3372 to get your ticket today!
