A crappy situation

- July 2, 2009

The beaches of Halifax Harbour opened last summer for the first time in years—something not likely to happen again anytime soon.

Halifax is dumping human waste into the harbour after the failure of a key part of its $333-million sewage treatment system. It may take a year to repair the plant after a power outage caused a valve to fail in January, flooding the building with seven million litres of sewage.

Since the $54-million plant broke down, more than 80 million litres of raw sewage has been flowing into the harbour every day. Not only that, but the screens to filter out solids into the harbour were removed in May.

What do you think about the situation? Who do you think is to blame and what should be done about it? Also, how do you think the city has handled the problem?
