Congratulations to Angelia Vanderlaan (PhD candidate in Oceanography) for being awarded the 2008 William T. Hornaday Award. Presented on June 24 at the American Society of Mammalogist's annual meeting in Billings, South Dakota, the award is presented for outstanding contributions to the conservation of mammals and their habitats. In this case it refers to Ms. Vanderlaan's quantitative analyses to determine optimum conservation options for the right whale and its critical feeding habitats.
William Temple Hornaday (1854-1937) successfully pushed for laws limiting the hunting of migratory fowl, and he is credited with saving the American bison from extinction. He laid the groundwork for the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., and spent nearly 30 years as director of the world-renowned Bronx Zoo in New York.
