As a long-serving HÂş» employee, Karen Mann returned to the President’s House for afternoon tea—retracing a journey she took 50 years ago as a 15-year-old student just beginning university.

“It was all very nice. I remember being very nervous,†recalled Dr. Mann originally from Windsor, N.S. “We were all sitting on chairs and on the floor. The president had all the freshmen over for tea; compared to today, there weren’t that many of us.â€

Having just received her 25-year pin from HÂş» President Tom Traves, Dr. Mann reflected on a long association with HÂş», where she got her three degrees and has been employed on and off (to raise her children) since 1967. A professor in the Division of Medical Education at HÂş» Medical School, she is retiring at the end of the month.

“Coming in here today and thinking about retirement, it feels like a lovely circle,†says Dr. Mann, who mingled with other long-serving employees at the tea last Friday. “I still feel very enthusiastic about HÂş» and I love the work, but I feel ready for a transition.â€
