Jessup Team shines at world final: David Mollica, Daniel Watt, Amy Anderson. .

Congratulations to the HÂţ» Law School Jessup International Law Moot Team, comprised of Amy Anderson, Michael Fenrick, David Mollica, and Daniel Watt. These students faced teams from fourteen other Canadian law schools at the national competition in Saskatoon, where they argued a tough international law problem before panels of judges and lawyers from across the country. They placed second at the national round, as well as winning a raft of prizes for their written and oral work. This propelled them on to the International Round in Washington, D.C., where Amy Anderson was ranked ninth overall oralist (out of 400 competitors) and the team won fourth place for their written submissions.

Congratulations to Stanimir Bonev (Physics & Atmospheric Science) on receiving the 2008 Alvin Van Valkenburg Award. Dr. Bonev will receive his award at The Gordon Conference on Research at High Pressure in Maine in June/July. Traditionally, the attendees of this conference have honored a young scientist working in the area of high pressure or a scientist new to the field.

Congratulations to Dennis Bowie (Medicine) upon receiving the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada’s Prix d’excellence for Atlantic Canada. This award of excellence recognizes Fellows of the Royal College who have made significant contributions as medical educators or provided outstanding service to their community and to the College.

Congratulations to Hélene Deacon (Psychology) upon receiving the March of Dimes Basil O’Connor Starter Scholar Research Award. This award will permit Dr. Deacon to extend her research on reading development to work with children who struggle to learn to read. The March of Dimes Foundation is dedicated to promoting healthy child development, with the specific intention of preventing impaired functioning in children.

Congratulations to biology student Anna Elliott  for receiving top prize for an oral presentation in the plant sciences from the Canadian Botanical Association. The topic of Ms. Elliott’s presentation was, “halting programmed cell death in the lace plant using the calcium channel blocker ruthenium red.”

Congratulations to Jill Grant (Planning) upon being elected to the College of Fellows of the Canadian Institute of Planners. In his congratulatory letter to Dr. Grant, CIP President, Mr. Blake Hudema, MCIP, likened this distinction to “entering the hall of fame of Canadian Planners.” He goes on to acknowledge Dr. Grant’s “exemplary contribution to planning that deserves recognition on a national basis.”

Congratulations to Amanda Pelham (Editor, HÂţ» Magazine, Communications and Marketing) for winning the gold medal for the best university magazine in our category for the redesigned HÂţ» Magazine. The judges were unanimous in their praise for the new design as “fresh, fun and varied” and applauded the magazine for taking risks that paid off.  The judges specifically mentioned “an inspired piece from a new undergraduate” – this article, entitled First Impressions, was written by first-year science student Michael Akerman.

Congratulations to Ron Stewart (Medicine) upon being recognized as a “Hero of Emergency Medicine” by The American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP).  The campaign, which is part of ACEP’s 40th anniversary, recognizes emergency physicians who have made significant contributions to emergency medicine, their communities and their patients.

Congratulations to Jessica Wise (MBA/MHA student) upon being honoured with the 2008 Frank H. Sobey Award for Excellence in Business Studies. Six Atlantic Canadian university business students received the award with each recipient receiving a cheque for $10,000 from David F. Sobey who commented that he hoped the awards helped foster an entrepreneurial spirit and build a closer relationship between the business and academic communities.

Congratulations to David Gardner (Psychiatry/Pharmacology/Pharmacy), Stan Kutcher (Psychiatry), Pat McGrath (Psychiatry/Psychology/Pediatric Pain Research Lab), and Archie Kaiser (Law/Psychiatry) upon their appointment to the newly-created Mental Health Commission of Canada.  The commission has three main priorities: to create a national strategy on mental health issues; develop an anti-stigma campaign; and create a knowledge-exchange centre, which will provide a range of resources for mental-health consumers, families, health care professionals and the public.
