Matt Campbell, from Blues Mills, Cape Breton, says prior to coming to H, his definition of engineering was a bit narrow.
ÒI used to think of engineers as just working in a plant or in a lab somewhere.”
Since earning his Engineering degree, Matt has discovered the diversity of the profession, and its many applications to daily life.
ÒYou can put an engineer into almost any field and they will make a significant difference,” he says.
Matt, along with fellow student Chris Houghton, is making a significant difference. For a senior design project, Matt and Chris developed a mathematical model to assist radiologists in lung cancer treatment. The end result is a reduction in time required to plan treatment for cancer. Prior to the studentsÕ work, this process could take a couple of days. Their model produces a solution within hours (or even minutes, depending on the complexity).
Matt will start a new position with Michelin soon after graduation. Eventually, he plans to continue applying engineering concepts to the health care field and pursue a MasterÕs degree. He says H gave him a solid foundation to pursue these goals. ÒI loved every second of the Dal experience,” he says. ÒI feel I made the best decision possible to come here.”
