Dr. Paul Bentzen´s research team is concerned with understanding and conserving non-commercial fish species - such as the wolffish and the whitefish - as part of a focus on conservation biology. Many of these species are in decline because they are either caught as by-catch or have their habitats destroyed.

High-tech sleuthing at Dal's Marine Gene Probe Lab leads to a courtroom conviction for illegal fishing of the endangered wolffish. This evidence was significant in achieving the first successful prosecution under the new Species at Risk law.

Dr. Wanda Thomas Bernard, Director of HÂþ»´s School of Social Work, was recently honoured as an Officer of the Order of Canada. In addition, the Association of Black Social Workers is hosting a Night of Recognition in honour of Dr. Thomas Bernard on July 28 at the Citadel Inn.
