Homecoming 2017 was a great success for the Faculty of Health with six events engaging over 400 alum over September 11th-14th.

Halifax Explosion Commemorative panel

The events kicked off Wednesday evening with a multi-Faculty panel discussion exploring how the Halifax Explosion lead to the development and professionalization of multiple health and social service professions, how it changed the physical features of the city, and how it has been commemorated and memorialized over the last 100 years. Featuring a broad range of experts representing the fields of history, architecture, sociology and anthropology, nursing, pharmacy, social work and emergency response, each panelist gave a short presentation before opening the floor to a full-house facilitated dialogue with attendees.

The evening was also highlighted by the official opening of the at the HÂþ» Art Gallery. Curator, Peter Dykhuis, worked with several artists, urban planners, social historians, cartographers, and architects to explore its various social and cultural impacts. The exhibits will be open until December 17, 2017.

Welcoming our alum, and new professionals

On Friday October 13th, several Health units hosted Homecoming events for students and alum.

A School of Occupational Therapy reception was held at The University Club Pub where students and alumni celebrated two significant anniversaries:the 35th Anniversary of the School and the 10th Anniversary of the Masters OT entry-level program. Both anniversaries demonstrate the growth and strength of their school and more celebrations are planned  over the coming year.

On Friday evening, the College of Pharmacy hosted its annual Pharmacy White Coat and Awards Recognition Ceremony officially welcoming pharmacy students to the profession. Dean Brenda Merritt congratulated award winners and welcomed new students to the health profession, noting, “The receipt of your white coat is an important milestone on your journey to becoming a health care professional. It symbolizes the great knowledge, responsibility and impact you’ll have on people, families and communities. As you continue your studies, I encourage you to build interprofessional networks, to identify opportunities to collaborate and to consider the perspective and role of your health colleagues.â€

Also on Friday, the School of Health Sciences hosted its 4th annual Homecoming Reception for staff, alumni and friends where they rallied their School community to join Team Health Sciences in the Health Fun Run/Walk Challenge.

And the winner is...Health Sciences!

On Saturday morning the President’s Fun Run/Walk was once again dominated by over 300 participants from the Faculty of Health. Our 10 schools and college enthusiastically participated in the annual Health Challenge and showed what great spirit our students and alumni have.

For the first time, the prestigious President’s Fun Run/Walk Alumni Cup was awarded to the School of Health Sciences. The cup will be displayed in their School for the next year. Congratulations to Health Sciences who took home both the trophy and $500 for a School social!

Saturday afternoon saw the College of Pharmacy host an alumni and friends reception with current students offering tours of the Burbidge building. Reunions were held for the class of 1987 (30th reunion) and the class of 1992 (25th reunion) and provided a great opportunity to revisit the campus, connect with old classmates and meet faculty members. Later in the day the College also held a Continuing Pharmacy Education Refresher course.

Thanks to everyone who came out to help the Faculty celebrate Homecoming 2017. Stay tuned for information about Homecoming 2018 - part of Dal’s 200th anniversary celebrations.
