Local student Hannah Hominick didn’t have to travel far to fulfill her dreams of working in the healthcare field in Nova Scotia.
A graduate of Cobequid Education Centre in 2022, Hannah took advantage of the Truro Start program on the HÂþ» Agricultural Campus to kickstart her career in Pharmacy.
The Truro Start program provides students with an opportunity to join a small group of students with dedicated resources and support to build a strong foundation in their chosen field before transitioning into their second and final years on the Halifax campus.
“Dal AC was always a place I had considered when planning my secondary education as both my dad and grandfather attended when it was known as NSAC,†she explained.Ìý “Growing up in Truro, I had been on the campus many times. I had considered attending but was unsure about taking general science,†she added.
That all changed when she learned about Truro Start.
“The close-knit community, the closeness to home, as well as its expanding areas of study were the main attractions leading me to the AC,†she said.
Hannah is currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science program with a goal to studying Pharmacy at HÂþ»â€™s College of Pharmacy this coming fall.
A recipient of the Dr. Peter Van der Borch, DVM Memorial Bursary, Hannah has also been part of the World University Service of Canada Club while helping to coordinate the Maritime Campus Ministry at Dal AC. Weekly Line Dancing as well as working at the Athletic Centre keeps her busy while also working as a pharmacy assistant at MacQuarrie’s Pharmasave.
“Working in a pharmacy and healthcare setting is what led me to apply for pharmacy school to become a pharmacist,†she said. “Getting to work with the community, a variety of healthcare professionals, and in a job where you get to help people navigate their health is something that is very important to me,†she added.Ìý “The growing possibilities in the profession are also something that is exciting to me.â€
The Truro Start program currently encompasses a Bachelor of Science, Bachelor of Arts and Social Sciences, Bachelor of Computer Science and Bachelor of Applied Computer Science.
“If you are interested in studying science, I definitely recommend checking out the Truro Start Program, or any of the other programs at the AC,†said Hannah.Ìý “Not only is it close to home, but the community there is also fantastic! The students and staff at the university help create a close-knit community that encourages you to strive for success in your education.â€
