Math and Physics Help Centre Tutor

Position Title: Math and Physics Help Centre Tutor (Multiple Positions)

Employer: Department of Engineering, Faculty of Agriculture

Responsibilities:

Tutors are responsible for leading one-on-one or small group lessons that cater to the needs and goals of the Faculty of Agriculture Math and Physics students. Responsibilities will include:

·         Reviewing classroom or curricula topics and assignments

·         Assisting students with homework, projects, test preparation, and other academic tasks

·         Working with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom

·         Providing students positive and constructive feedback

·         Offering feedback on topics areas to course lecturers when appropriate.

Qualifications:

·         Be either an undergraduate student (Year 2 or above), graduate student (Master’s or Ph.D. level) at HÂþ»­. or recent HÂþ»­ alumnus (graduated no more than 3 years prior to application),

·         Have attained a minimum of an A- in at least 2 related course(s) (MTHA 1000, MTHA 1001, STAA 2000, PHYS 1000, PHYS 1002) and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3.

·         Demonstrate strong verbal communication skills to clearly explain challenging concepts, provide instructions and deliver feedback

·         Be encouraging with students as they develop skills and improve their performance

Rate of Pay:

$15.50/hr

Hours per Week:

Negotiable – typically less than 7 per week

Other: Math and Physics Help Centres Sessions will be hosted on MS Teams synchronously. Successful candidates will need to have access to the internet compatible with this environment.

Start Date:  Sept 8, 2020 End Date:  December 18, 2020 (Extension to Winter Term possible)

Position Title: Math and Physics Help Centre Senior Tutor

Responsibilities:

Senior Tutors are responsible for leading one-on-one or small group lessons that cater to the needs and goals of the Faculty of Agriculture Math and Physics students. Responsibilities will include:

  • Reviewing classroom or curricula topics and assignments
  • Assisting students with homework, projects, test preparation, and other academic tasks
  • Working with students to help them understand key concepts, especially those learned in the classroom
  • Providing students positive and constructive feedback
  • Offering feedback on topics areas to course lecturers when appropriate.
  • Help train other peer tutors and monitor the smooth operation of MAP.
  • Liaise with MAP Help Centre administration on related projects

Qualifications:

·         Be either a recent HÂþ»­ alumnus (graduated no more than 3 years prior to applying to be a tutor), graduate student (Master’s or Ph.D. level) at HÂþ»­.

·         Have attained a minimum of an A- in at least 2 related course(s) (MTHA 1000, MTHA 1001, STAA 2000, PHYS 1000, PHYS 1002) and a cumulative GPA of at least 3.3.

·         Demonstrate strong verbal communication skills to clearly explain challenging concepts, provide instructions and deliver feedback

·         Be encouraging with students as they develop skills and improve their performance

·         Must have at least 3 years of tutoring experience, preference if experience is at the MAP Help Centre.

Rate of Pay:

$20.50/hr

Hours per Week:

Negotiable – typically less than 10 per week

Other: Math and Physics Help Centres Sessions will be hosted on MS Teams synchronously. Successful candidates will need to have access to the internet compatible with this environment.

Start Date:  Sept 8, 2020 -  December 18, 2020 (Extension to Winter Term possible)
