Guest Lecture and Discussion with Dr. Andrew Jennings, a Viking Specialist from the Centre for Nordic Studies, the University of The Highlands and Islands
°Õ¾±³Ù±ô±ð:Ìý Fografiddle and Giltarump - An interesting exploration of Shetland's unusual place names.
'Dr. Andrew Jennings is based in Scalloway, Shetland's ancient capital. He enjoys everything about life in this beautiful archipelago, from rowing in the local yoal team and taking part in the Fire Festival, to walking the dog and experiencing the wild Shetland weather. Living in Scotland's most northerly islands, with their Nordic cultural inheritance, inspires his research and his teaching. He teaches on many aspects of Shetland and Orkney culture and is the programme leader on the MLitt in Island Studies. He also teaches a module on Vikings in popular culture which involves watching Viking movies, reading comics and listening to Viking metal. Someone has to do it.'
'Unusual place-names are a feature of the Shetland landscape. They tell the story of Shetland's history and of connections with the Norse world. They also provide an opportunity for Shetlanders to express their identity, distinct from that of mainland Scotland. Dr Jennings will introduce this unique cultural heritage.'
Light Refreshments will be provided
