Message from the HÂþ» Libraries

HÂþ» Libraries commitsÌýaÌýmajorÌýportion of our collections budgetÌýannuallyÌýtoward subscriptionsÌýto Elsevier journals.ÌýSoÌýit isÌýwith pleasure we can announce that,Ìýthrough our ongoingÌýpartnership withÌýthe Canadian Research Knowledge Network (CRKN), we will seeÌýaÌýsignificantÌýchange in our agreement with Elsevier in the coming three years.Ìý

AfterÌýa yearÌýof negotiations,ÌýCRKN’sÌý (°ä³§°ä) h²¹²õÌýÌýthat increases open access,Ìýreduces subscription costs,Ìýand allows for transparencyÌýof subscription package costs:

  • ´¡â€¯Ìý20% discount on Article Processing Charges (APCs)Ìýfor both hybrid and gold open access journals. Cell Press, ÌýLancet, and some other society-owned journals are excluded.
  • ´¡Ìý12.5% reduction in the subscription priceÌýfor 2021, followed by a 0% change for 2022, and aÌý2% increaseÌýfor 2023 for all journals in the Freedom Collection, including former Academic PressÌýjournals, with no loss of perpetual access rights.
  • No confidentiality or non-disclosure clause,Ìýwhich allows theÌýlicenseÌýterms to be shared.Ìý

These changesÌýdemonstrate the value of negotiating at a national level.ÌýHÂþ» researchers will see some relief on APCsÌýandÌýthe HÂþ» LibrariesÌýwill be ableÌýto free up collections funds to reinvest inÌýother much-neededÌýresources.Ìý

The details on how to receive theÌý20% discount onÌýarticleÌýprocessingÌýchargesÌýareÌý, andÌýCRKN have confirmed that Elsevier will provide the discount retroactive to January 1, 2021.ÌýÌýÌý
