As a Dal engineering student, Nathan Barrett (BEng’17) never thought he'd one day help shape HÂþ»­â€™s campus. The opportunity to be project manager for construction of the new Oulton-Stanish Centre was a dream come true. 

Kori Hamilton, had a difficult childhood, bouncing around foster care systems and lacking the necessary support to stay on track. As the recipient of the Myrna (Millard) Ward Entrance Bursary, Hamilton is now at Dal studying to become a nurse—something she says she couldn’t have done without Dal community support.

Progress on Dal-led research in 2024 offered solutions to some complex issues society faces. One such example was Dr. Matthew Margeson’s (PhD’24) work helping invent a desalination device that helps fight water scarcity. It is powered by sunlight and uses recycles tires.

On Oct. 21, Dr. Ron Stewart (MD’70, LLD’17), a notable alum, generous donor to Dal medical research and honorary degree recipient, passed away. With deepest condolences to his family, friends and colleagues, we reflected on Dr. Stewart’s profound life of service and his impact on health care and Dal. 

In support of Dal’s Brining Worlds Together campaign, a $600K gift from RBC funds wraparound supports for African Nova Scotian/Black and Indigenous students in medicine, health and dentistry.

We went behind the make-up to get to know music and theatre alum Andrew Pelrine (BA'10), who works as the Faculty Alumni Manager for Dal’s Faculty of Health and performs in drag as Bunni Lapin.

Sports marketer Armaan Ahluwalia (BMgmt’13) has had a lot of cool jobs, most recently joining an F1 team in the U.K. He’s stayed connected to Dal from wherever he’s living and is a valued volunteer board member with the Dal Alumni Association.

This year we honoured physiotherapist and lifelong volunteer Kim Furlong (BScPT’88, MSc’00), labour relations and human rights lawyer Douglas Ruck (BA’72, LLB’77), social-impact consultant Mike Davis (BEng’01, MEng’08), organic farmers and entrepreneurs Patricia Bishop (BSc(Agr)’99) and Josh Oulton (DipTech’96), professor emeritus Dr. Jeff Dahn (BSc’78).

Notable alumni have achieved significant accomplishments, and are well-known in their professional and personal circles. They have distinguished themselves through achievements, leadership and contributions to society. They are widely recognized and respected.

A graduate of Schulich Law’s Indigenous Blacks & Mi’kmaq Initiative (IB&M), Nathaniel Marshall (BA’09 JD’13) dreamed of becoming a lawyer so he could give back to his community. Now, he has a Toronto-based practice specializing in workplace issues including anti-Black racism. By setting up the Keith & Gail Marshall IB&M Award, Marshall is helping current students realize their dreams.
